Tankwa Town - South Africa

Yggdrasil,

Afrikaburn

06/03/2017 -  19/05/2017

Yggdrasil was the biggest, longest and most intense project I have ever been involved in. Going into the dessert with minimal drawings for the core structure from an absentee engineer and the design for the rest purely a concept it was 7 weeks of intense weather, hard work, problem solving and community.

I ended up heading up a large portion the design and leading teams cladding the tree taking it from a hexagon structure to gnarly tree with winding roots. To do this we utilised 50 tons of raw uncut blue gum and wattle fencing both alien species in South Africa chosen for that reason.

It was a crazy process using lengths of 10mm rebar as nails and cutting joints with a chainsaw and axe.

I was also responsible for designing and making a triple level sunset deck sunk into one of the roots.

After the burn I joined my old family from across the dessert the Department of Public Works (DPW) for two weeks of meditation and contemplation with the best freaks, walking the desert picking up cigarette butts and mirrorball mirrors as part of keeping up the leave no trace principle, leaving the desert as empty as when we first arrived.
